The cyclops itself also had a layer of AR underneath it, so the two layers combined created that black hole effect on an otherwise non-AR crystal. There are some pics of what happens if you remove it as well as a copy of the Rolex spec sheet for the AR cyclops crystal here: https://minus4plus6.com/116710.php#cyclops This technique avoids an issue where the heat from the coating process melts the glue under the cyclops and causes some small bubbles or other artfacts to appear between the cyclops and crystal. Hence the term "black hole". Most of the Rolex models that feature a date window are accompanied by something called a Cyclops lens. It is basically a convex lens that is placed right over the date window on the crystal of the watch. The lens magnifies the date by exactly 2.5 times and makes it . When you shoot a close-up, and the lens is centered on the dial's center shaft, then there is a form of "wide-angle" apparent perspective distortion. That makes the cyclops look shifted to the right slightly. If you re-shoot with the lens centered on the cyclops itself then you will see it is centered on the date aperture. _____ The current Rolex Datejust 41 with a Cyclops over the date window.
