Dating from 1929, this stunning 9k gold Rolex Oyster features an attractively aged dial and a rare, recently serviced, Ultra Prima movement. Its 28mm works perfectly for men and women alike who prefer a smaller, more understated look to their vintage watches. Prima, Extra and Ultra Prima movements were the top of the range and were frequently fitted to watches with gold cases, often 18 carat gold. Unfortunately, many such movements lost their original case when it was melted for bullion.
The Ultra Prima is the rarest and most accurate of the movements used by Rolex at the time. Following manufacture and assembly, these movements were tested for accuracy with those performing in the top 10% being given the “Ultra Prima” designation.
The three versions were; Prima, Extra Prima and Ultra Prima, with the Ultra Prima representing the most accurate version and accounting for only the top 10% of Oyster watches. The second issue presented more of a challenge.
Then came the Hunter movements starting at 10 1/2''' in 15 jewels, graded Prima, Extra Prima and Ultra Prima, with Chronometer grade in 17 and 18 jewels.
